The purpose of this experiment is to find the rate at which sand/salt leaves the container. To do this, we used equations for related rates to relate the change in the height of the container to the change in the volume. We can measure the change in the height using a distance sensor, which will give us dh/dt, the rate at which the height changes. Using the following derived equations, we can use this value and measurements of the cone to calculate dV/dt, the rate at which the volume changes.
Equations V= 1/3(3.14)(R^2h) H/h =R/r V=(3.14)(R^2h^3)/(3H^2) Height = 53.7 cm Radius = 14 cm dV/dt = (3.14)(R^2h^2)(dh/dt)/(H^2)
